Don is a successful manager in an agressive investment firm. He has been a hit all his life both in work and with the ladies. The sort of Alpha-Male all other men detest but secretly wish they could be. He chases and flirts with all the girls in his life, except those he works with - because of an office policy that bans dating between co-workers.
One day he hires Ema, a modest and girl-next-door type who seems to be a mere fish amongst the sharks in the firm. There's just something about her. At first others try to prey on her, both professionally and on a personal level. However, Don takes her under his wing - because of her story of destitute and woe, and wants her to get the best chance she has in life.
Over time, as Don and Ema work more closely together, they begin to bond. Not only is Ema becoming successful in work, Don also realises to his chagrin that he is falling in love with Ema. He really wants to make a move on her, but Office Policy clearly stops him from doing so. It's tough to be able to focus on his work, and when he tries to get Ema transferred, she pleads with him in such a heart-felt way that he is compelled to keep her. Love triumphs over all, it seems.
One day there is a scandal at work, and both Don and Ema are accused. Don is stuck. The old Don would immediately bail himself out, but his love for Ema has become too strong. Don sacrifices himself at the altar of retrenchment so Ema can keep her job.
But the great thing is that Don and Ema can now date. Or perhaps not, because Don finds out that Ema has been playing him all along. She manipulated him to favour her over the others, and she lied about her unprivileged background, and it was even her who created the crisis that caused Don to quit.
Don wants to get revenge, but Ema is now insulated in her world and keeps Don away. Don finally manages to get through by applying for a lower-level job in the company through his ownership of the company's shares - a job that means that Ema is his boss - and gets back in. Only this time, the roles are reversed and Ema is Don's boss.
Despite Ema's attempts to get Don fired, he is successful at creating a schism between parties in the company so he is protected from her machinations.
All this builds up to an important shareholders meeting when they have to effectively vote between the two groups: one headed by Don and the other headed by Ema. The thing is, Don has finally figured out that it is better to persuade than to manipulate, because they will pay you back.
This results in Don winning the election. Finally he is in a position to decide what to do with Ema again. Instead of firing her, he invokes a binding clause in her contract that means she can't quit the company without the company getting back all they gave her. And he assigns her to a job in Mulu as an accounts manager.
